Ssgt. Larry LaMont Cunningham served with distinction as part of Company F, 51st Infantry Group, a division of the II Field Force. On December 3, 1968, the long range patrol he commanded was suddenly ambushed while in Phuoc Vinh Province. Facing overwhelming odds against a full-company assault, Ssgt. Cunningham demonstrated heroic valor and laid down covering fire so that his teammates could reach the extraction point, at the cost of his life.
"I do not believe that the men who served in uniform in Vietnam have been given the credit they deserve. It was a difficult war against an unorthodox enemy." ~ General William C. Westmoreland, General of the Armies (1968 -1972)
